The Home Stretch: Finishing the 2023-2024 School Year Strong
As the sunny days of May arrive and the school year winds down, our students and classrooms begin reflecting on their journey. We often emphasize the fresh start of September, like setting goals and forging ahead with enthusiasm. Winter break serves as a mid-point checkpoint, a chance to assess progress and recharge.
But May is unique – it’s the home stretch, the sprint to the finish line. It’s a time to channel all the hard work and dedication invested throughout the year into a final push. We celebrate the milestones reached: the completed projects, the conquered assessments, and the enriching extracurricular activities. These experiences shaped a memorable school year and created bridges between our students and their newest passions.
On the last day of school, May 30, we will have completed 180 days of instruction. That’s 180 busy mornings, 180 opportunities to make a new friend, 180 days of learning, and 180 chances to bring our best each day. For families and staff members, that’s 180 days of juggling schedules, managing drop-offs, and balancing your needs while supporting our children so they may be their best selves every day.
As we navigate these final weeks, let’s not overlook any achievement, no matter how small. Let’s remember that every day is an opportunity to learn, grow, and make a positive impact. It’s these daily efforts that have brought us to this point in our journey.
As we approach the finish line together, let’s celebrate our collective achievements, big and small. As we look forward to a summer of memories and rejuvenation, let’s acknowledge the remarkable journey we’ve had this year. A heartfelt thank you to our staff, families, and community members for your invaluable contributions – together, we’ve made this a school year to remember!

Remembering the Golden Rule in 2020
The Golden Rule is big in my house – treat others the way you would like to be treated. We do our best to be friendly, caring, and to offer a kind word of support to our friends and each other. That is the kind of spirit I am seeing more often amid our current challenges. Human kindness will always prevail, and it gives me hope for the future. In this spirit, RCSD is committed to supporting our students, families, staff, and community as we continue maneuvering through the new frontier of distance learning and physical distancing.

The beginning of each school year is typically filled with excitement and butterflies, maybe even a little bit of nerves, but I acknowledge that this school year will come with more mixed emotions than ever before. Families have had to make tough choices in deciding how their child will return to learning along with balancing work schedules, health and safety guidelines, and much uncertainty. While there are still so many questions and unknowns, the one thing we do know is that we are in this together.

A few months back, we had no idea the impact COVID-19 would have on our day-to-day lives. We didn’t know the extent of the burdens that our families would face, and we could not have predicted the toll it would take on our staff, as they transitioned their classrooms and workspaces in a matter of days. Our entire school community of teachers, parents, staff, and of course, students, should be commended for their flexibility and understanding that much of what is happening is out of our immediate control.

As I write this article with two weeks left in the school year, we are living in a time that will look much different from when you’re reading it. What will school look like next year, based on future guidelines from the State of California? Are we moving closer to transitioning into Phase 3? What does our District budget look like in the year ahead? Have our children gone stir crazy-(er)? Our District doesn’t pretend to have all the answers, but here’s what we do know:

May 2020 Teacher Appreciation Month
One of the more uplifting messages I’ve been hearing lately is about silver linings. For many, if not most of us, the past couple of months have been the strangest experiences of our lives. At the District, we’re implementing systems and routines, and one thing is for certain – our staff has the mindset that shows we are ready to meet this “new abnormal” straight on!

Back to School!
August is when we all head back to school and begin reminiscing about what did over the several weeks of summer break. I’d like to share what our District did over the summer!
Perhaps most noteworthy, we began summer by breaking ground on our 20th school, Riego Creek, located near Crawford Parkway and Fiddyment Road. We were joined by our board of education trustees, District staff, city council members and our construction team, all of whom took part in shoveling the first mounds of dirt!

Summer fever has hit our house and between movie nights, blasting music and video game tournaments, it can be challenging to really connect (and disconnect!) with my boys. I hear parents lament about this frequently: How do you get your kids to unplug from their devices and focus on the human interaction that helps develop their social skills, emotional intelligence, and kindness? Well, I have a few tricks my up sleeve!

Time to Wrap it Up!
The end of each school year traditionally is a time to reflect over the many goals and milestones we accomplished this year. We usually scratch our heads and think—”Where did the year go!?” While we take a look back, we are also looking forward to new opportunities and ways to grow that will allow us to prepare our students to succeed. I’d like to share with you why I believe why this school year shaped up to be one of the most productive and memorable for me as your superintendent.

So, when Roseville City School District says that we pride ourselves on our commitment to excellence in education, we work to put those words into action. Our ultimate goal is to maximize learning for each and every one of our students. Additionally, we strive for all of our children to be proficient in Common Core State Standards and to progress towards college and career readiness.
