ADMINISTRATION

Karen Calkins - Principal (kcalkins@rcsdk8.org)

There’s a bunch of research that says educators gravitate back to teach and work in the grade levels that they themselves enjoyed most as a student.  And that is your principal’s case!  There is nothing better than helping a middle school student make good choices about learning and life, and it is a privilege to work with the people who choose to teach and work with them!  I came to be at Cooley Middle School after teaching high school English, middle school English, Social Science, and Student Government/ASB.  My administrative service includes being an Assistant Principal for a decade and a principal for three years.

In addition to thinking a middle school campus and its students are about the best things in life, I enjoy hanging out with my teacher husband and our two kids, Addy (11) and Jake (8).  We all love water sports, boats, and music, and my all time favorite hobbies are flea markets and yard sales followed by a passion for reading!  (Cooley students:  Rewards in May for any student who out-reads the principal for the school year – my treat!)

I am honored to be principal at Cooley, and I am committed to supporting our school and the staff, parents, and students who make it all happen.  I truly believe that Cooley is a special place to be and that together, we create a school dedicated to excellence!

Daniel Brear - Assistant Principal (dbrear@rcsdk8.org)

I’m extremely proud of the huge leaps Cooley made last year and am looking forward to another successful year.  This is my 3rd year at Cooley and my 6th year in the district.  My wife also works in the district as a 2nd grade teacher at Spanger Elementary school. We live in Roseville and have young two sons.

I’m very fortunate to have worked with other educational professionals who have inspired and taught me so much about student learning.  I love working with kids and have a passion for education.  I look forward to coming to school everyday to ensure that students are safe as well as academically successful.

In addition to education I have always had a deep interest in music and have played guitar and bass in bands as well as professionally in my past. I also love spending time outdoors whether it is fishing, hiking, surfing, swimming, scuba diving, skiing or snow boarding.

I’m looking forward to a great 2009-2010 academic year with all the Cobras!

Todd Gladwill - Assistant Principal (tgladwill@rcsdk8.org)

Cooley Middle School is indeed a special place to be.  I’m so fortunate to be a part of Cooley as Assistant Principal.  Before my current position, I taught 8th Grade U.S. History, Leadership, Computer Technology, and Study Skills.  My wife is also very involved in education too.  She currently teaches Physical Education at Spanger Elementary School and Woodbridge Elementary School in Roseville.

I have always loved working with kids.  I spent about ten summers working at a summer camp located outside of Placerville as the Horsemanship Director.  It was through this experience that I discovered my passion for working with kids and education.  I was also a manager at Hewlett-Packard for several years and learned a lot about managing teams and organizations.  Since then, I have worked with several inspirational educators who have helped me along my journey in education.

It is my goal to work with students at Cooley Middle School in order to help them discover their greatness.   The middle school years are very exciting and at times challenging, but I feel they are the most rewarding.  I cherish each day that I spend with the students at Cooley Middle School.
