Back to School!

August is when we all head back to school and begin reminiscing about what did over the several weeks of summer break. I’d like to share what our District did over the summer!

Perhaps most noteworthy, we began summer by breaking ground on our 20th school, Riego Creek, located near Crawford Parkway and Fiddyment Road. We were joined by our board of education trustees, District staff, city council members and our construction team, all of whom took part in shoveling the first mounds of dirt!

We attribute our growth to the quality of life Roseville offers, our award-winning schools and our city continually ranking high for millennial and retiree homebuyers. Growth has been so steady that District enrollment has increased 45% since the year 2000. We are expected to reach 25 schools and 16,000 students within the next 20 – 25 years, which means planning for the future is a top priority.

Our facilities crews were also hard at work this summer. Taking advantage of empty classrooms, they work in expedited time frames to paint exteriors, upgrade grounds and provide ongoing maintenance that is challenging to do with hundreds of eager students buzzing about! Many thanks to our teams who work all summer long so our students can learn in safe and comfortable surroundings!

Plans are also coming together to celebrate the 150-year anniversary of our District. Where chalkboards, notebooks, and wooden desks were once classroom essentials are now SMART boards, Chromebooks, flexible seating, and the parents’ favorite…PowerSchool! What began as a District of 44 students has matured into a hub of innovative education serving nearly 11,500 students – and counting!

RCSD is proud of where we began, how far we’ve come and where we’re going. Stay tuned to District news, our 150-year celebration and back to school updates on our Facebook page.

Until next month,

Derk Garcia
