Roseville City School District

Welcome to the 2018-2019 school year at Buljan Middle School.

My name is Mrs. Kochhar and I have taught math for almost 15 years.  I feel that this will be a rewarding year of learning and personal growth for each of us.  I am excited to get to know you throughout the year as we work together to master 7th grade common core standards.  I welcome you to extend your best efforts to not only achieve but, excel in math.

Growth will come from a combination of hard work, perseverance, precision and the desire to take RISKS!  This year I will challenge you to LISTEN, THINK, SPEAK AND WRITE in the upmost precision and  DETAIL.

To achieve our goals I ask students for three things:

1) . Trust me! Each activity has been carefully planned to ensure your success to master 7th grade math standards.

2) . Communicate to me what you do/don’t understand everyday so that I can help you progress.

3)  Be respectful of peers, our learning environment and your individual success in this class.

If you have any questions or feel troubled with the material please take a few minutes to come talk to me at lunch or send me an email so that we can come up with solutions together.   “Inch by inch it is a cinch…yard by yard it is very hard.” I am here to ensure your success in math and will do all that I can to help you achieve that goal. I wish you the best of luck with your academic achievement this year!  Mrs. Kochhar

COURSE OBJECTIVE

7th grade math will focus on four critical areas:

Develop a strong understanding of and apply proportional relationships in context.

Develop understanding of operations with rational numbers and working with expressions and linear equations.

Solving problems involving scale drawings, informal geometric constructions, and working with two- and three-dimensional shapes to solve problems involving area, surface area, and volume.

Drawing inferences about populations based on samples.

To ensure success in these four critical areas our initial focus needs to be on MASTERY of number sense (decimals, fraction, integers, ECT.) then the application of these skills to solve more complex real-world problems.  Throughout the year we will emphasize a deep understanding of the material taught and we will be explaining our mathematical thinking in written form.

MATHEMATICAL PRACTICES

Make sense of problems and persevere in solving.

Reason abstractly and quantitatively.

Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.

Model with mathematics.

Use appropriate tools strategically.

Attend to precision.

Look for and make use of structure.

Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.
