Principal Spotlight
Julia Mochrie
Junction Elementary School
How and when did you begin your career in education?
I began in Southern California after graduating from college at Northern Arizona University. I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to student teach at the elementary school that I attended.

What led you to become an educator?
I am passionate about fostering a love of learning in students and building strong academic skills. I love looking for new and innovative ways to make learning fun. What makes my role as an educator most rewarding is seeing a student's face light up when they grasp a new concept.

What is your favorite Junction tradition?
I've been lucky enough to spend time at Junction this spring, attending Leadership Day, Open House, and chatting and dancing with the students at lunch. What I have loved most about my time spent at Junction so far is the kindness and warm welcome that I have received from all of the Junction Jaguars!

What are your favorite hobbies?
Spending time with my family is definitely my favorite activity. I am a mom to two children, Ainsley and Hudson. As a family, we love to travel and explore new places, cook, and bake.
Come grow with us! RCSD is hiring and we want you to join the family.

Cirby Elementary Book Buddies Program
Seven years ago, Cirby Elementary began a partnership with the Rotary Club of Roseville to encourage literacy and a love of reading with 3rd-grade students, known as Book Buddies. Former Roseville City School District Superintendent Rich Pierucci helped cultivate the partnership that has grown and expanded over the years. The community volunteers for the Book Buddies program have now expanded to include other groups and individuals, including Children's Hope Foster Family Agency, Valley Springs Presbyterian Church and other friends of Cirby.

The program began with one 3rd grade classroom and now reaches all 3rd-grade students at Cirby. At the beginning of the school year, big buddies from the community partner with little buddies from the school, with the big buddies providing a carefully selected book and an individual letter every 4-6 weeks.  Little buddies receive the letters and books, returning a thank you note to the big buddies. This partnership continues through the year, concluding with a Book Buddies Picnic at the end of the year to celebrate friendships and a love of reading. While the students benefit from receiving their own books, the real magic is the encouragement they receive from a caring adult with a love of learning through reading. Thank you Rotary and community volunteers for encouraging our students to love reading!
The entire RCSD family is thankful for the many years of service and dedication of our certificated and classified staff. The folks listed above as well as Debbie Fasl, Terrie Hardin, and Connie Rowden, are now celebrating their retirements, but we can't help but miss them already. Thank you for helping make a difference in the lives of our students. Happy retirement!

Eich's Career Technical Education programs such as Woodshop apply aspects of engineering, critical thinking, and technical skills, unique components of our International Baccalaureate program.

Facilities Update
Our Facilities Department works hard to beautify and maintain our school sites, such as upgrading Sargeant's front landscaping with new plants and rock (below left) and keeping Buljan's landscaping lush and vibrant (below right).

This summer, the team is planning a large landscape project at Eich's 6th-grade campus, along with repairs to the asphalt, walls, and roofs of many of our schools. Finally, you'll see some fresh painting at Blue Oaks and Gates Elementary schools.
But the makeovers don't stop there. Check out Buljan's newest project below! Our team is converting an old Home Economics room into an updated classroom. They've removed cabinets, installed a new HVAC and spruced it up with fresh paint!

For some students, the school year is their only chance for a guaranteed meal, and summer can expose students to an increased risk of hunger. For others, summer vacation can bring the temptation of eating empty calorie snacks and foods that don't fuel their growing bodies. RCSD is committed to providing access to quality nutrition in a supervised environment for all children 18 and under. No registration is necessary. For more information, call 916-771-1675 ext 248 or learn more here!

Superintendent's Corner

Ah, summer’s in the air and our students are enjoying time off from school with their families. While our #RCSDChampions are spending the summer recuperating from another school year on their educational journey, the Roseville City School District keeps hustlin’ and bustlin’.

Each summer, RCSD offers a free summer meal program to ensure all children 18 and under receive a nutritious meal they can count on. The program, sponsored by the United States Department of Agriculture, runs June 10 through July 26 at five schools and RPAL to ensure that children throughout Roseville have access to a safe, supervised environment in which to enjoy their meal. The best part is there is no registration required! For times and locations, click here.

Many families move into our community in the summer months, growing RCSD enrollment numbers and prompting the District to pool our resources to provide for the needs of our students. This means you’ll be seeing and hearing some construction west of Fiddyment this summer as we expedite the building of our 20th school, Riego Creek Elementary. More families mean more students which means the need for more facilities! We are thankful to be a strong district that is able to provide for our RCSD family. Stay tuned for updates!

Not only do we welcome new families into our community each year, but this summer the District is welcoming two new principals and four new assistant principals, along with many new teachers, aides, and support staff. Each of these staff members pledge to uphold our District culture of The 4 C’s, demonstrating character, competence, commitment, and care for our students.

As always, summer moves too fast, but we look forward to seeing how much your students have grown, learned and developed while they’ve been on break. And we can’t wait to show you how hard we’ve been working all summer long! Remember to mark your calendars for the first day of school on August 8, 2019. We’ll meet you at the front gates!

Respectfully,
Derk Garcia
