Coronavirus (COVID-19) Update

Article

Simply stated, we had no idea the impact COVID-19 would have on our day-to-day lives. Families and school districts are working through the scenarios of how schools will operate in August and beyond. While I believe there is no substitution for a highly qualified teacher being in front of students daily, I realize this may not be an option for some. I believe every family must do what best suits their circumstance.

We want our families, students, and staff to feel as safe and supported as possible. Therefore, I will recommend three separate educational options for the 2020-21 school year at the school board meeting on June 22, 2020.

  • Traditional Schedule: Five days per week of in-class instruction with class sizes to be determined based on the number of students who elect in the hybrid or online learning model from each school
  • Hybrid Schedule: Two days per week of in-class instruction and three-days per week of at-home independent learning with a maximum of 17 students per day in a class.

    1. Limited availability at specifically designated schools
    2. RCSD teachers
    3. Connection to your current school
    4. Families to arrange/provide home-to-school transportation
    5. Families to arrange/provide childcare on the at-home independent learning days
    6. Guaranteed placement at currently enrolled school for the 2021-22 school year
  • Champions Academy: Full-time online learning program from home with a maximum of 25 students per teacher in a class.
    1. RCSD teachers
    2. Standards-based daily instruction
    3. Whole group and small group instruction
    4. Personalized instruction with teacher meeting time
    5. Includes asynchronous and synchronous personalized learning
    6. Connection to your current school
    7. Guaranteed placement at currently enrolled school for the 2021-22 school year

We will present additional details about each educational option to the school board on June 22, 2020, at 6:00 p.m. A decision will be made at the June 29, 2020, school board meeting. The Board meeting agenda, presentations, comment form, and Zoom link are available at rcsdk8.org on the bottom right-hand corner of the home page.

Even though life is different today and there are factors beyond our control, we remain more committed than ever to you: our community of students, families, and staff.

Thank you for your input, understanding, and patience.

Respectfully,

Derk Garcia
Superintendent
