A Season of Transition
As April graces us with warmer days and longer sunshine, we find ourselves in another season of change. While families anticipate transitions from one grade to the next, with many middle schoolers stepping up to high school, our dedicated staff gears up for the final stretch of the academic year.
After a well-deserved spring break, students and staff are preparing for state testing, which includes the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP). These standardized assessments in English Language Arts, math, and science (for 5th and 8th graders) align with California Common Core State Standards, providing valuable insights into student progress and guiding instruction. Educators, schools, and the district then use these assessment results to evaluate student performance, identify areas for improvement, and inform instructional practices.
To help your child feel prepared, encourage them to rest well, fuel up with a nutritious breakfast, approach the tests with confidence, and do their best. For extra practice, explore practice tests together and reassure them that giving their all is all that matters – we’re already proud of their hard work!
A major component of how we ensure our students excel is by effectively staffing our sites and programs to support all students. This sometimes means an increase in staffing needs, so we’re actively seeking individuals of strong character who are caring, competent, and compassionate. The beginning of each school year is typically filled with excitement and butterflies, maybe even a little bit of nerves, but I acknowledge that this school year will come with more mixed emotions than ever before. Families have had to make tough choices in deciding how their child will return to learning along with balancing work schedules, health and safety guidelines, and much uncertainty. While there are still so many questions and unknowns, the one thing we do know is that we are in this together.

A few months back, we had no idea the impact COVID-19 would have on our day-to-day lives. We didn’t know the extent of the burdens that our families would face, and we could not have predicted the toll it would take on our staff, as they transitioned their classrooms and workspaces in a matter of days. Our entire school community of teachers, parents, staff, and of course, students, should be commended for their flexibility and understanding that much of what is happening is out of our immediate control.

As I write this article with two weeks left in the school year, we are living in a time that will look much different from when you’re reading it. What will school look like next year, based on future guidelines from the State of California? Are we moving closer to transitioning into Phase 3? What does our District budget look like in the year ahead? Have our children gone stir crazy-(er)? Our District doesn’t pretend to have all the answers, but here’s what we do know:

One of the more uplifting messages I’ve been hearing lately is about silver linings. For many, if not most of us, the past couple of months have been the strangest experiences of our lives. At the District, we’re implementing systems and routines, and one thing is for certain – our staff has the mindset that shows we are ready to meet this “new abnormal” straight on!

Back to School!
August is when we all head back to school and begin reminiscing about what did over the several weeks of summer break. I’d like to share what our District did over the summer!
Perhaps most noteworthy, we began summer by breaking ground on our 20th school, Riego Creek, located near Crawford Parkway and Fiddyment Road. We were joined by our board of education trustees, District staff, city council members and our construction team, all of whom took part in shoveling the first mounds of dirt!

Summer fever has hit our house and between movie nights, blasting music and video game tournaments, it can be challenging to really connect (and disconnect!) with my boys. I hear parents lament about this frequently: How do you get your kids to unplug from their devices and focus on the human interaction that helps develop their social skills, emotional intelligence, and kindness? Well, I have a few tricks my up sleeve!

Time to Wrap it Up!
The end of each school year traditionally is a time to reflect over the many goals and milestones we accomplished this year. We usually scratch our heads and think—”Where did the year go!?” While we take a look back, we are also looking forward to new opportunities and ways to grow that will allow us to prepare our students to succeed. I’d like to share with you why I believe why this school year shaped up to be one of the most productive and memorable for me as your superintendent.

So, when Roseville City School District says that we pride ourselves on our commitment to excellence in education, we work to put those words into action. Our ultimate goal is to maximize learning for each and every one of our students. Additionally, we strive for all of our children to be proficient in Common Core State Standards and to progress towards college and career readiness.

But what about creating a list that takes stock of what we love about our lives and communities? Things that make us who and what we are. This year, I’d like to list a few things I appreciate most about Roseville City School District:
